Summer Blues in Stripes

Is your wardrobe ready for summer?  I've been doing quite a bit of shopping for my upcoming vacation and all I can say is I've got the summer blues!  I'm sure you've noticed the explosion of pale blues, summer bright whites, and classic stripes all over Pinterest, Instagram, and fashion blogs!  This is the quintessential look of summer style!

When it comes to summer fashion, I love to wear shorts!  I've started quite a collection of solid colors and prints over the years and find that this is the first thing I grab when looking for something casual and comfy to wear on a warm spring or hot summer day!  I picked up these blue and white striped shorts this past Memorial Day weekend!  I generally prefer a 5" inch inseam with a mid rise fit because I am tall and feel a bit more comfortable wearing a slightly longer length.  However, I did roll them up slightly for this blog post and I also like that versatility.  I knew they would be perfect for summer as they are made in a cool linen blend material which is so soft and comfortable!   

I decided to wear them with this crisp white one shoulder ruffle top!  I adore the cute structured ruffle and the length is perfect to wear un-tucked over shorts, skirts, or leggings!  This will be one of my summer go to tops and I may go back and get a few other colors!  It also comes in black, royal blue, and tangerine orange!  Also, it's currently on sale for 40% off, so you may want to pick one up before they sell out quickly!

I topped off my summer blues in stripes outfit with my favorite straw hat that I usually wear all summer long and my classic gold Tory Burch Miller sandals.  I've had both of these items for a number of years and they never go out of style and always look great!  

I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day holiday weekend!  Hopefully you were able to spend some time with your loved ones creating memories and doing something fun!  I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the military service men and women both past and present for their commitment and sacrifices to protect and serve our country!  Both my mom and dad served in the US Marine Corps and now lie to rest in the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.   Therefore, this holiday holds a special place in my heart!

Old Town San Diego

I'm finally getting around to posting more of our summer vacation memories - this time... from Old Town San Diego State Park,  We recently took a vacation to San Diego in early July and I knew this was one place I didn't want to miss! We arrived a little earlier in the day to avoid the crowds and the heat!

There are a ton of cute shops that sell handmade items such as clothing, pottery, garden decor, jewelry, blankets, etc.  You can also find a ton of touristy shops if your looking for postcards, tee shirts, key chains, and San Diego swag!  I especially loved all the colorful handmade pottery and tiles made in Mexico!

I knew it was going to be a hot day and I needed something that would keep me cool as we strolled through town.  I packed this red, white, and blue linen striped shift dress in my luggage.  It was a perfect choice for this particularly hot summer day!  It's made of 55% linen and 45% rayon, so it's a very soft medium weight blend that kept me cool for most of the day!  I love the cinched tied waist which gives this dress more of a fitted look.  It comes in two other color options that are perfect for summer!

My Family!  My boys are getting so big!  They will be 10 years old this fall!

I brought along this Old Navy red, white and blue striped bag which is currently sold out.  I used it as a carry on tote for our plane trip but it also came in handy to hold miscellaneous purchases we made during our visit.  I stashed our sunscreen, water, and snacks for the family when we went out exploring.  It was super convenient!  You can also see how I styled it in this recent post here!  Here are a few other similar options here and here that create the same look!

I love cactuses and succulents and Old Town has many of them!  This is one of my favorite photos from the trip which I took with my iPhone! 

Did you know that Old Town is the birthplace of California?  It's where the first European's settled back in 1825.  There are over 17 historic points of interest and the finest in professional theatre,  museums, artisans, galleries and shops all within easy walking distance.  During our visit, we also enjoyed free live entertainment including mariachis, dancers, and period attire docents providing tours of the historic sites.

I brought along my denim jacket because I wasn't sure how late we would stay and it always cools off in the evenings at the coast.  This denim jacket goes with just about any summer dress.  It's one of my go to pieces, especially when I need to think about layers!  I also brought along these cute white sunnies and have worn them non-stop since!  Here are a few other cute sunnies I have had my eyes on here and here!  

We ended our visit to Old Town with some much deserved ice cream!  It was the perfect way to chill out, relax, and decide what to do next!

I would highly recommend if you plan to visit Old Town in the summer that you plan accordingly for the weather and type of activities you want to do.  I have heard that the Mexican food and margaritas are the best at the local restaurants!  If you are looking for more night life entertainment, food, and drinks, then plan to go later in the afternoon when the weather cools down a bit so you can still get some shopping done and then enjoy a great meal and cocktails!  I think we will go back for that during our next visit!

Striped Tank Dress

We recently spent a week in San Diego over the 4th of July holiday.  I knew when I packed for this trip, I would need plenty of red, white, and blue and comfortable clothes to explore around in!  Before we left for our vacation, I stopped by Old Navy to get some outfit inspiration.  I picked up this navy blue and white striped maxi tank dress!

It's been a while since I have worn a longer maxi dress and I figured it was time to mix up my wardrobe a bit and try some new things!  First of all, I love the super soft jersey knit this dress is made with.  It's like wearing soft pajamas!  I tied a small knot at the bottom of the dress for fun!  This gives it a more fitted look but it also looks beautiful and flowy draped on its own.  

I love navy blue and white stripes!  This is a quintessential nautical look, especially paired with red and gold accents (which also made it a perfect outfit for 4th of July). I brought along my favorite denim jacket for the fireworks show as it does get cooler in the evening when you're out at the coast.  

It's really easy to accessorize this dress!  I recently purchased this festive red and white striped tote which was perfect to bring as a carry on for the plane trip.  It also worked great to stow beach essentials such as sunscreen, my hat, and towels when we went out exploring!  Here are a few other cute options I found here and here.  

I recently purchased these cute white sunnies that go with almost any summer outfit.  Lately, I have been bored with my sunglasses and wanted to frame my face with some color!  I didn't want to spend too much and these were a great option!  Now, I'm on a mission to find more bold and bright colors!  I love these ones here, here, and here!  Perfect for summer, don't you think?

Holiday Gift Guide: For Him

I have some more holiday gift ideas to share with you today.  Whether you are shopping for your husband, boyfriend, brother, or best friend, these gift ideas will be sure to spread some holiday cheer! 

Men are actually pretty simple to shop for and please.  I usually select gifts based on their hobbies or interests.  Here are some examples:

Foodies: some men love to cook, ahem, or eat!  Let's face it, most are masters of the barbecue!  Therefore, a quick trip to find some kitchen necessities would be perfect!  [ideas: BBQ utensils, wine, bar sets, a night out to that fabulous restaurant in the city, followed by dessert!]

Techies: some men get a bit geeked out over hitech gifts and gadgets! [ideas: music, movies, computer software, digital photography, wireless anything!]

Sports Fanatics: there is an abundance of sports gifts out there!  Whether they enjoy football, golf, baseball, fishing, running, or hunting, you can find something for the sports fanatic in your life [ideas: visit your local sporting goods store!  My husband loves to fish so I renew his fishing license each year!  My brother loves baseball so I usually get him something from the San Francisco Giants!]

Rockstar Legends

The summer brings lots of fun outdoor activities and one of my favorite things to do is get a bunch of friends together to go to a concert!  I actually love all kinds of music...country, pop, R&B, rap, etc.  Today, I am in a "rock n roll" mood so I wanted to share with you some of my favorite picks for "rock star style"!

Aren't these rock band tank tops from Old Navy just perfect?  I am showing three different ways to style them and create a legendary look!  I love pairing them up with a bit of an edgy style using ripped up black leggings, distressed denim shorts, or a mini skirt.  To top off your rock star style, don't forget a pair of cool sunglasses and awesome kicks!  How about these studded military combat boots?  If your not into the grunge look, a pair of red hot converse or casual flip flops work equally well!  The point is, make your style a bit more edgy and loud!  Take yourself out of your comfort zone and remember...don't just be a rockstar...be a rockstar legend!

On Tuesdays We Wear Tulle!

On Tuesdays we wear tulle!  It's time to pull out your terrific tulle skirts and show us how you style them for summer time!  I picked up this perfectly pink tulle skirt from my good friend Paige on Instagram.  She created a fun fashion challenge called "Tullesday" and invites everyone to participate!  Look for the #tullesday hashtag on Instagram today and join in on the excitement! 

I love seeing how everyone styles their tulle skirts!  Don't be afraid to be creative and have some fun!  I decided to wear mine with a graphic print tank top and jean jacket.  The summertime temperature here in the San Francisco bay area can vary quite drastically from day to night.  Therefore, it's always a good idea to have layers!  I added a gorgeous statement necklace and a colorful pair of snakeskin high heels for a little sparkle and swag!  What do you think?

California Dreamin'

As soon as I get home from work, the first thing I do is change into comfy clothes!  This is the time I'm usually fixing dinner, throwing in loads of laundry, walking the dog, and helping the kids with their homework! During these hot summer months, there's nothing more comfortable and cool than an Old Navy graphic tank top and shorts!  These gems are available in various colors and fun graphics and the length is perfect - long enough to cover your hips and make you look slimmer!

I love styling these tank tops with different looks.  I opted for a simple and casual summer look paired with sneakers and a fun statement necklace to add some sparkle!  However, add a jean denim jacket and a pair of  rockstar skinny jeans and you're ready for cooler nights.  To be honest, these tank tops will go with just about anything - including my pajama pants, I am wearing right now as I am writing this post!! (by the way - they come in tall sizes!!)
