Modern Style Elements

My taste in home décor has definitely changed throughout the years and so have the trends.  I still have one bedroom in my house that keeps my antique country pine furniture that I‘ve had since I was a young girl.  However, as I get older, I am finding that my style has become a little more modern and I’m trying to be more of a minimalist – this is a work in progress!

The architecture of my home certainly doesn’t lend to modern style, but I like to find unique pieces that I can add here or there that give it some contemporary flair.  Adding modern style to your home is actually quite easy.  A good place to start is with the bare bones - paint, wallpaper, floors, texture, and art work.

If you are lucky enough to live in a beautiful city loft with exposed brick on the walls that’s great!  However, there are many inexpensive products out there now that help you achieve a similar look.  To create your own accent wall, check out these wallpaper products called Wallpops.  Here are some stone samples here and here.  Also, I really like theses styles here and here that are a bit more modern.  It's fun to create an accent wall and you can paint the other walls with a complementary color. I like to keep to the neutral tones such as cream, beige, or grey.

Lighting in the room is so important.  In addition to well placed LED can lights, choose additional lighting that makes a bold statement and serves a purpose.  I just love the industrial look of this Modo chandelier designed by Jason Miller.  The Modo collection features hand blown glass with slight variances in shape and color which makes each piece unique.  Here is a less expensive option but with a similar style.

Artwork and accessories are probably the most important pieces in modern and contemporary style.  Black and white artwork and accessories can really make a bold statement, especially when combined with a pop of color.  Here are a few decorative pieces that I really love here, here, and here as well as this beautiful black and white Cello artwork by Joseph Knowles, Jr. here and here. Books can also make for great conversation pieces and are accessories on their own.  Since I love fashion, home decor and travel, I choose books related to those topics.  Throw them on a bookshelf on on your coffee table for a great addition to your overall style.  Here are a few of my favorite book suggestions: Culture Chanel, Living in Vogue, and/or Dior - 60th Anniversary

The most expensive pieces in your modern room will be the furniture.  Look for pieces with clean and straight lines.  I really love this cream colored sectional by Serena & Lily which ties into the cream colored chairs in the dining room.  I also love this modern glass top dining table which reflects the light from above very nicely.

Last but not least, don't forget to add soft and interesting textures to your overall modern design.  This can be accomplished with curtains, area rugs, throw pillows, and blankets.  You can check out a few I have selected here, here, and here.

As with all home decor projects, start small and build on your design over time.  Remember, the biggest impact you can make which is relatively quick to do and inexpensive is dressing the walls with paint or wallpaper.  Make sure whatever you select has purpose, function, or personal meaning to you!

Neon Pink Skinnies & Heels

I’m keeping it totally casual for today’s post wearing this black razor back peep-hole top and Infinity Love bracelet from Infinity Boutique!  What I love about this sleeveless top is the versatility!  You can wear it with a maxi skirt, shorts, jeans, or capris – it literally goes with everything!  I found some similar tops here and here but check out Infinity Boutique if you like this one…it also comes in white!

I decided to pair it up with my American Eagle Outfitters neon pink jeggings (no longer available in this color) and black bow heels!  I love the classic look of skinny jeans with high heels and it’s even more fun with neon colors.  I found some similar neon jeans online.  Check them out here or here and shop from my full list of similar styles, including these black bow high heels below.

Aqua Lace Maxi Dress

I'm sharing another beautiful maxi dress from Infinity Boutique today.  This gorgeous aqua and lace maxi exudes Victorian romance!  The vibrant aqua blue color is stunning and a perfect color to wear for spring and the upcoming summer months!  The cream lace overlay bodice creates a romantic and sweet touch, yet the strapless design and sheer overlay skirt give this dress modern styling.

I wore this dress with minimal accessories but I do think it would be beautiful to accessorize with pearls such as these options here, here or here.  The shoe possibilities are also endless.  I chose to wear these flat sandals but these styles here and here would also be a darling addition!

For more beautiful clothing and accessories, please visit Infinity Boutique's online store.  You can also check out my most recent post here where I featured their floral print maxi.  I would like to thank Infinity Boutique for sponsoring this post!

Weekend Beach Style in Santa Cruz

Location: Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, 400 Beach Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060, USA
My favorite childhood memories are the times I spent with my family at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk during spring break! My mom and dad would pack up the RV and drive out of town late Friday afternoon after my brother, sister, and I were done with school for the week!

If you haven't been to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and are planning a visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, this is a place that cannot be missed, especially if you are looking for a fun family getaway!  The boardwalk is located at 400 Beach Street in Santa Cruz, CA which is about a 75-minute drive from San Francisco and 45 minutes from the Monterey/Carmel area.

There are a lot of fun attractions, rides, events, and things to do at the Boardwalk.  Whether you enjoy relaxing on the beach with a good book, playing video arcade games with the kids, exploring the shops and restaurants on the wharf, or riding the 90+ year old Giant Dipper roller coaster, there is an fun activity for every age!

I love to continue this old family tradition with my kids now.  It's a great time to let loose and act like a kid again!  We enjoy splashing around in the ocean, searching for all kinds of sea-life including the sea-lions, starfish, and crabs, throwing a football on the beach, eating all kinds of fun boardwalk treats such as cotton candy, soft serve ice cream, candied apples from Marini's, and hot dogs on a stick!  I don't worry too much about sugar overload on vacation!  It's all about indulging in the boardwalk experience that makes you feel like a kid again!

There are many places to stay in Santa Cruz.  My family enjoyed staying at the Santa Cruz/Monterey KOA Kampground a few miles south in Watsonville.  It's a great place for kids if you love camping, rv'ing, or cabins and is within 10-15 minute drive to the boardwalk.  There are some other great lodging accommodations you can check out in the local area.  If you are looking to stay in a 4 diamond resort with the comforts of a beach home you may like to try out Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos!

Here are a few of the snapshots I took on our Spring Break weekend at the Boardwalk!  We had so much fun and plan o go back again very soon!

Travel Colorfully!

Hayley

Spring Break Weekend with Mara Hoffman

What are your plans for this last spring break weekend of 2015?  Well I hope you are getting out and enjoying some beautiful sunny spring weather.  As it begins to warm up more, I have been thinking about bathing suits.  It's been a while since I bought a new bikini and its really hard to envision myself in one right now.  I still have some winter weight to shed off, my legs are as white as a ghost, and I need to get to the gym for some serious toning!  However, all that aside, bikini shopping in the spring is a great source of motivation to get to the gym and shed off those extra pounds!

As for what I'm loving in beachwear right now...Mara Hoffman!  I adore her colorfully designed clothing, swimsuits, and accessories!  This stunning and bright one piece reversible lace up swimsuit is the perfect style for me.  I love the lace up detail on the back of the suit, the higher waist line (a hot returning trend in swimwear right now), and the cut out detail on the sides.  Add a beautiful cover-up such as this Mara Hoffman whisper weight black georgette beach dress.  I love the colorful and vibrant embellishments around at the neckline and back and the draped slit front style which is perfect for any day at the pool or on the beach!

Don't forget your beach day accessories!  Always wear a hat to protect your face from the damaging rays of the sun as well as plenty of sunscreen!  I love the black bow detail on this straw hat  as well as this one.  Both are perfectly versatile to go with just about anything you wear!  Also, make sure you throw a pair of sunnies in your beach bag!  I have always been a huge fan of the Ray Ban aviators and these ones are my favorite!  Last but not least, pack a cute pair of embellished sandals to complete your beach day look!  Check out the these darling styles here, here, and here!

Feel free to shop all of my Mara Hoffman picks below as well as some additional beach/resort style accessories!  Enjoy your spring break weekend!

Blue Jacquard Dress

Happy Wednesday everyone!  I had a 2 day work and now I am officially off for spring break along with the hubby and my boys!  We decided to have a "staycation" this time.  Sometimes it's nice to just stay home...catch up on those projects that have been on your honey do list all year round, veg out and catch up on your favorite television shows that have been waiting for you on your DVR, or just sit back, relax and enjoy a good book to read!  However, before I begin doing all of the above, I wanted to share my most recent spring dress purchase from Nordstrom!

Designed by Betsey Johnson, this beautiful light blue damask-patterned jacquard dress is a perfect addition to your spring wardrobe. The fit and flare silhouette is one of my favorite designs!  Once you put it on and zip it up you'll want to grab your high heels and do a few twirls in front of the mirror (at least I did!)  I love the dainty cap sleeves and the exposed back-zip closure.  This dress is fully lined and made of 100% polyester.  Based on the recommendations, if you are between sizes order one size up as it runs a little small.  I normally wear a size 6 but ordered a size 8 which fits perfectly!

Oh by the way, this dress is currently on sale and did you know that Nordstom will price match?  That means if you find it anywhere for a lower price, Nordstom will honor that price!  That way you get the great deal, the excellent customer service from Nordstorm, and don't forget points towards your Nordstrom Notes!

I hope you all are having a great week so far!  I would love to hear from you!  In the comments below, please make sure you list your social channels or blog url so I can follow along too!

Enjoy Shopping!
xoxoxo,

Hayley
